In the 1970’s, when California was just starting to fall in love with Chardonnay and Cabernet, my dad also planted Touriga Nacional, Tinta Cao, Bastardo and other Portuguese varieties. He had no idea how they would grow, but he had a vision of making world class port-styled wines from our Amador County ranch. Along the way we began making dry table wines from these exotic varieties. The results have been spectacular…our 2014 Tempranillo and 2016 Touriga both won Best Wine of California at the State Fair. Over the years, we’ve continued to lean into these varieties, expanding our portfolio to include Verdelho, Souzao, Touriga Nacional, Bastardo (Trousseau).
