MOHR FRY RANCHES

The Mohr and Fry family farming legacy stretches back to the 1850s, when Cornelius Mohr—Bruce Fry’s great-great-grandfather on Jerry Fry’s maternal side—left his job aboard a whaling ship in San Francisco Bay. Trading the sea for the soil, Cornelius began farming on a Mexican land grant in Mt. Eden, near what would later become Hayward.

In 1965, facing growing urban sprawl in the Bay Area, the family made a pivotal move to Lodi. There, they purchased the property that today is their home ranch—where we proudly source our Old Vine Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Alicante Bouschet.

Our partnership with the Fry Family isn’t built on written contracts or formal agreements. It’s built on a handshake, mutual trust, and a shared commitment to do the right thing. We’re honored to share the fruits of that partnership with you. Enjoy the wines—and the story they carry in every bottle.

Our story · 1996

Sealed with a handshake and a glass of zin.

We didn't have the money to pay for the grapes. We had no idea how the wine would turn out. Jerry told us not to worry about it.

When we moved our winery to Lodi in 1996, our own vineyard was dying of phylloxera and we had no grapes to make wine. My father worked out a deal with the Lodi Winegrape Commission — if a grower brought us two tons, we'd make the wine, give them twenty-five cases, and keep the balance.

Jerry Fry showed up with seven tons of beautiful Old Vine Zinfandel.

My father didn't know what to do. Jerry told him we'd work it out later. We ended up bottling 450 cases of that first vintage. It won a bunch of awards, sold out quickly, and has since grown to be our most popular wine.

To this day, we don't have a contract — just a relationship sealed with a handshake, and a glass of Zinfandel.

EVERY YEAR HAS A STORY TO TELL.

Hail, frost, heatwaves and everything in between. Each vintage delivers a story, and it is our job to tell it.
